The 2026 Winners in Detail
Physiology or Medicine: Optogenetics
The Medicine prize was announced by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. Karl Deisseroth is an American psychiatrist and bioengineer, while Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel are German biophysicists. Their work led to optogenetics, a method that uses light to switch individual nerve cells on or off inside a living brain. It helps scientists see how neurons shape memories, feelings and behaviour, and it is now a standard tool in neuroscience.
Physics: Ghost Particles from Space
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave the Physics prize to Francis Halzen for discovering high-energy neutrinos that come from beyond our planet. Neutrinos are extremely small subatomic particles that pass through the Earth and even through our bodies without being noticed, which is why they are often called ghost particles. Halzen's work, linked with detectors buried deep in Antarctic ice, opened a new kind of astronomy.
Chemistry: The Mystery of Homochirality
Many molecules exist in two mirror-image forms, much like a left and a right hand. Living things on Earth mostly use only one of these forms, and this is called homochirality. Henri B. Kagan of France and Kenso Soai of Japan were honoured for providing a solution to the puzzle of how such one-handedness can emerge on its own. The mystery was more than a hundred years old.
Literature: Anne Carson
The Swedish Academy awarded the Literature prize to Anne Carson, a Canadian poet, essayist, translator and classicist. At 76, she is praised for blurring the line between poetry and prose and for giving ancient works a fresh voice. She follows Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, who won in 2025.
Peace: Navi Pillay
The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Navi Pillay, a South African jurist and human rights lawyer. The committee described her as a legal pioneer who challenged deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. She is also a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which makes this a very likely exam question.
